A journey of kindness
Kindness per se has many definitions, a cursory scan through the internet & a few dictionaries will throw up things like:
“The quality of being friendly, considerate and generous”
“An act of being gentle, caring and helpful”
“The quality or state of being kind”
While all of these capture the essence of kindness in varying degrees, an exceptional example that I recently stumbled upon turned my conception of the term to its head!
Before I begin with its description, I want you to pause and think, is kindness deliberate or natural? Is it constant or momentary? Is it directed towards a few or is it universal? Is it situational or premise agnostic?
Think, twist and turn these possibilities in your mind for some time, the more you dwell on it, the more you’ll realize that kindness is a very fluid and tangible concept, and not half as fixed as we sometimes assume it to be. A more curious idea is that, if one were to place people and situations on a “kindness spectrum”, to include all the possibilities discussed above, only a God or a Supreme Saint could fit the highest ideal. Yes? Hard to conceptualize?
Now, pause again… and slowly absorb the example of kindness that follows and let it elevate your thinking to a place it’s hardly been before,
The best example of “kindness”, as explained by an ascetic is that of the Sun! The Sun with its infinite energy and strength, holdings our solar system together, moves the planets and other celestial objects, envelops them all within its warm protection from the colder unknowns of the universe, this same sun, lights our day, gives us heat and energy, becoming a very important part of all our lives, all 6 billion of us, it does the same for all the plants, animals and insects too, and last but not the least, imagine a tiny sapling just beginning to sprout out from the ground, its tiny roots yet to fully understand the nourishment of the soil around it, with equal and utmost grace, this mighty solar ball of fire, directs its photons towards this sapling as though it has nothing else in the world but this task to do!
Read the questions I mentioned above once again, does the Sun fit the criterion?
This, dear reader, is the epitome of kindness! Imagine the extremely ecstatic and fantastic journey of that tiny photon, born in the belly of the sun as a result of tumultuous cosmic dances of pressure and matter, it bursts into existence billions of miles away, swims though long distances of nothingness, pierces through the earth’s atmosphere, dodging its clouds, its dew, its dust, its gases, its pollution, its buildings and towers and structures, to finally bounce and bumble and stumble to you! Yes, to you, and by embracing your eyes and allowing you to see, it ends its infinite journey!
That to me is a journey worth all our wonder, awe and humility, that to me is a real Journey of Kindness… unselfish, unconditional and universal!
